Tom Ford Staged a Runway Show in an Abandoned Subway Station

New York’s public transit system might be in a state of crisis, but at least we have Tom Ford to lighten things up—sort of.

The designer tonight staged his Spring/Summer 2020 show in an abandoned subway station on Bowery Street in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, confirming what we thought all along from mysterious Instagrams of dirty steps and wording reminiscent of MTA announcements.

For Ford, who’s known for his sexed-up, smoky glamour both at his own label and during his heyday at Gucci, this is a slightly different approach than last season, when he showed his Fall/Winter 2019 collection at the tony Park Avenue Armory in Upper Manhattan. But it also recalls Martin Margiela’s groundbreaking Spring/Summer 1992 presentation in Paris, the first fashion show to ever take place in a subway. Staged in a Metro Station that had been abandoned since the ’30s, Margiela’s catwalk was revolutionary in that it challenged the status quo of high fashion.

No word yet on whether there’ve been any rat sightings at tonight’s show, but rest assured Ford is fully leaning into his new post as chairman of one of New York’s most important fashion organizations.
