His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 99 on Friday, April 9 2021 at Windsor Castle as announced by the Buckingham Palace.

World leaders have been expressing their thoughts with the Royal Family like US President Barack Obama who remembered the royal’s selflessness on Facebook and Twitter,

“Like the Queen, Prince Philip saw world wars and economic crises come and go. The radio gave way to the television, and the television to the internet. And through it all, he helped provide steady leadership and guiding wisdom. It has long been said that the United States and Great Britain have a special relationship — one that has been maintained and strengthened not just by presidents and prime ministers but by the Royal Family that has outlasted them all.” Obama shared in a Facebook post.

Born on June 10, 1921 to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark of the House of Schlewig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg, was the seventh child of King George I of Grece and Olga Constantinovna of Russia. During World War I, the Prince’s family had been forced out of Greece when King Constantine and Sophia of Prussia choose a neutral stance in the conflict.

In exile, Prince Philip was sent to a school, Gordonstoun in Scotland run by Kurt Hahn. The isolation and abandonment without any of his relatives or his guardian George Milford Haven to visit him during his entire childhood leading Philip to develop his own free spirit, resilience, and imagination. In 1938, Philip enrolled at the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth where he learned how to be a midshipman on cruisers and battleships. It was also where Philip met Princess Elizabeth at the age of 13 years old with her sister Princess Margaret. Elizabeth was captivated by Philip’s good looks and corresponded with one another blossoming into a marriage on November 20, 1947.

Philip supported his wife, developed a personal art collection, became a patron of more than 780 organizations by the time he retired in 2017. However, he continued with his own engagements in society totaling more than 22,219 along with his wife. HRH established The Duke of Edinburgh Award to empower the youth in the United Kingdom to build skills, confidence to make a difference in the world.

Prior to Megan Markle, he was the only foreign-born royal who helped convey a fresh take on improving men’s royal style and redefining British style for seven decades. Philip was not the type to wear ornate sashes, epaulets, or braids on his outfits. His suits were custom made on Savile Row from Davies & Son, Turnbull & Asser, Gieves & Hawkes, Hunter Wellingtons, and boots from John Lobb.

Rebelling the dress code for 65 years became his goal, where his tall, athletic, and good looks helped play a role in looking confident and stylish. Instead of the traditional Swiss timepieces, Philip preferred a plain watch with a brown leather strap. He preferred sporty looks inspired by cricket, hockey, polo, and sailing. Philip had a more smart-casual, single-breasted jackets, a relaxed approach to British fashion. He stuck to the classics like the British tweed jacket, ties pocket square handkerchiefs, and black shoes. Philip had a style of his own that took a more relaxed approach to fashion as opposed to the typical royal dress.

His style is faultless and eye-catching and to mark his death, CR takes a look back at how he shaped British style history.
