Art Basel is adapting to the coronavirus pandemic, opting for a digital platform for its Hong Kong 2020 edition. Originally scheduled for last month but canceled amidst COVID-19 safety concerns, Art Basel Hong Kong will be hosting its first-ever Online Viewing Rooms, which will allow artists and exhibitors from around the globe to virtually show their work. The viewing rooms will launch tomorrow, March 20, 2020 and will remain live through March 25, 2020. VIP previews were held March 18-19, 2020.
Connecting galleries, artists, and collectors, the virtual fair will feature around 2,000 pieces from over 230 dealers across 31 countries. The Online Viewing Rooms are boosting the transparency and accessibility of the art world. Many galleries have already begun to share previews of what they are brining to the digital platform, posting works to social media.
Some galleries have also launched their own digital viewing rooms as social distancing measures are keeping doors closed. David Zwirner has been hosting online exhibitions since 2017, showing specially curated, online-only content. The gallery’s viewing room for Art Basel Hong Kong will be its largest to date, featuring work by Jeff Koons, Marlene Dumas, Noah Davis, and more, with a total value of over million. Beyond the art fair, New York’s Jack Shainman gallery is also offering digital walk-throughs upon request, and others are also working on launching digital programming.
