Pop culture’s fascination with horror shows no signs of dying. Turning back to the classics, Universal has announced that a remake of Dracula is in development. The bloodsucking vampire’s story will be retold with Karyn Kusama, who was responsible for horror films Jennifer’s Body and The Invitation, at the directorial reigns and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions behind the production. Blum is well-versed in the thriller and horror genres having launched the Insidious, Sinister, Ouija, and Purge franchises, as well as the original Paranormal Activity.
Count Dracula was originally introduced by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula, in which the titular vampire moves from Transylvania to England and menaces the living. Since then, the character has become the quintessential model for vampire archetypes and has been the subject of over 200 films.
The upcoming movie is currently untitled and is set as a modern-day version of Universal’s 1931 Dracula. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay, who have both previously worked with Kusama, will be writing the script.
This announcement follows the box-office success of Universal’s recent horror flick The Invisible Man and the resurgence of other thrillers, such as the 2018 Luca Guadagnino remake of Suspiria. The film studio has also slated another thriller with Aquaman director James Wan, which will draw from Universal’s Monsterverse–the franchise of characters including Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolf Man, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, which were also introduced in the same era as the original Dracula.
