The 26th New York Armory Show Kicks Off with Preview Day and MoMA Party

Yesterday, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City launched the annual Armory Show with a preview day at Piers 90 and 94 in Manhattan, with the Armory Party following that night at the museum’s primary location. As New York’s premiere art fair, the Armory Show is a cultural destination with art from 182 global galleries and 32 countries from the 20th and 21st century on view. To celebrate, Orville Peck took the stage at MoMA for a live performance during the evening benefit, along with DJ sets by Kitty Cash, Hank, and Mona. Proceeds from tickets to the early access preview and party assist MoMA’s exhibition programming.

This year marks the 26th annual Armory Show, and the 19th consecutive year the fair has dedicated its opening day to MoMA. This year’s exhibitors are presented in six sections: Galleries, for outstanding 20th- and 21st-century works; Perspectives, a new section for historical artwork shown through a contemporary lens; Focus, dedicated to solo- and dual-artist presentations; Presents, devoted to works from galleries no more than 10 years old; Platform, for large-scale installations and performances; and Not-For-Profit, for participating organizations to promote the visual arts to collectors and other visitors. In addition to the art on view at the piers, attendees at the Armory Party were invited to explore MoMA’s second-floor Collection Galleries, as well as current exhibitions featuring the work of photographer Dorthea Lange and Haegue Yang’s multimedia sculptures. A visitor dressed in the likeness of Peck was even wandering through the galleries wearing a cowboy hat and fringed mask, two of the country singer’s staple wardrobe pieces. The real Peck performed several of his hits later in the evening, decked out in a custom turquoise suit and handmade fringed mask.

Peck has been at the forefront of country music since the release of his first album, Pony, last spring. He draws on the traditions of the country genre, from his rich, baritone crooning to showy Nudie suits. His sound, style, and anonymity has captivated many, including the fashion world. Peck performed at the Dior Men Fall/Winter 2020 show in Miami last December, and most recently sang at Michael Kors’ Fall/Winter 2020 runway show at New York Fashion Week last month. As someone who has taken tradition and flipped it to fit the contemporary lens, the musician made a fitting choice to fête the Armory Show, which features many artists doing the same across visual media.

The Armory Show is a main component of Armory Week in New York, which began March 3 and includes numerous fairs and exhibitions across the city. Galleries, museums, and other institutions will be hosting a number of artists, exhibitors, events, and other programming through March 9.
