Seventeen-year-old Greta Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize today, making it the second time the young climate activist has been put forward for the prestigious honor. Her first nomination came last year, from three members of Norway’s parliament. This year, Swedish politicians Jens Holm and Håkan Svenneling nominated Thunberg for her dedication to fighting climate change and spreading awareness.
According to Holm and Svenneling, the activist “has worked hard to make politicians open their eyes to the climate crisis.” They also reasoned that the, “action for reducing our emissions and complying with the Paris Agreement is therefore also an act of making peace.”
Thunberg first came to global attention in 2018, after pictures of her striking for climate change outside of Sweden’s Parliament went viral. Since then, she has made appearances at other protests, spoken at the UN Climate Conference, earned an impressive number of awards for her activism, and been named as Time’s 2019 Person of the Year.
Only 17 women have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in history, including 2014 Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai. The Pakistani activist for female education was 17 years old when she won the prize, making her the youngest prize winner in history. This year’s Nobel Prize winners will be announced in October 2020.
