As many entertainers cancel live performances and concerts in a safety measure against the current coronavirus pandemic, many have taken their talents to social media to spread awareness and virtually stimulate a sense of community. While social distancing, people can tune into Instagram Live, Periscope, and other platforms to watch stars like John Legend and Miley Cyrus host real-time shows for the audience.
The World Health Organization and Global Citizen have joined forces with a number of musicians for the #TogetherAtHome Instagram Live concert series. The inaugural performance was by Coldplay’s Chris Martin who played acoustic renditions of the band’s hits, including “Yellow,” “Sky Full of Stars,” and “Viva La Vida.” Legend followed on Tuesday, and did not disappoint. Joined by wife Chrissy Teigen, who was perched on top of the piano wearing a bath towel, Legend performed “All of Me” and gave a preview of a new song titled “Actions Speak Louder Than Love Songs” from his upcoming album, which he also announced during the live stream. Other artists slated to perform #TogetherAtHome shows include Miguel, Sean Mendes, and Camila Cabello.
Other celebrities like Miley Cyrus are seeking to bring optimism through dialogue. This week, Cyrus is recording Bright Minded: Live, a series of conversations that she hopes will provide hope and a reprieve from the stress of the pandemic. Her first two guests were her therapist and bestselling author Dr. Daniel Amen, and friend and fellow singer Demi Lovato. For today’s live stream, she will be speaking with Lauren Speed and Cameron Hamilton from Netflix’s Love is Blind. The daily episodes go live at 11:30 a.m. PST.
Pop artist Charli XCX will also begin an Instagram Live content series with some of her famous friends. The first show, which goes live at 9 a.m. PST today, will feature Christine and The Queens engaging in a conversation around creativity and mental health during the current crisis. Later in the week, Charli will do a personal training session with Diplo, a game of Would You Rather with Kim Petras, and an art class with Clairo.
Earlier this week, Lin-Manuel Miranda went live on Periscope, performing some hits from Hamilton to encourage viewers to donate to The Actors Fund and Broadway Cares, following the closure of theaters in New York City. Miranda’s show, like most other live streams, can still be viewed after-the-fact, so don’t worry if you weren’t able to tune in.
Plenty of other stars, from country artist Hunter Hayes to classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, are continuing to share live performances on a daily or weekly basis, keeping spirits up during this trying time.
