Musician, fashion icon, and beauty mogul Rihanna received thunderous applause as she accepted the prestigious President’s Award at the 51st NAACP Image Awards on Saturday evening. The singer was being honored for her philanthropy work and fundraising efforts with charities such as Raising Malawi, UNICEF, and her very own nonprofit, the Clara Lionel Foundation.
Throughout her career, Rihanna has completed major work in the philanthropic space. As a constant advocate of education, women’s rights, and overall wellness, the star established the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012, which supports emergency response and aids impoverished countries with health care and education around the world.
During her acceptance speech Rihanna proposed a powerful statement on the importance of unifying communities, which immediately caught the attention of audiences worldwide. “If there’s anything that I’ve learned, it’s that we can only fix this world together, we can’t do it divided,” she said. “I cannot emphasize that enough. We can’t let the de-sensitivity seep in. The, if it’s your problem, then it’s not mine; it’s a woman’s problem; it’s a black people problem; it’s a poor people problem.”
She then posed a question to the audience: “I mean, how many of us in this room have colleagues and partners and friends from other races, sexes, religions? Show of hands. Well, they want to break bread with you, right? They like you? Well, then this is their problem, too. So when we’re marching and protesting and posting about the Michael Brown Jr.s and Atatiana Jeffersons of the world, tell your friends to pull up.”
The powerful speech concluded with another question: “Imagine what we could do together?” and the onset of roaring applause.
