Although Kim Kardashian West’s style has changed over the years, one thing that’s remained a constant is her ability to stun. With every scandalous selfie and tender family photo shared online, her fans have avidly liked and shared the star’s posts, making her one of the most viral people in the world. Whether it comes to unforgettable fashion looks, baby name reveals, or career moves, Kardashian West is the master of dropping bombshells on the internet. In celebration of the CR cover star’s 39th birthday today, CR revisits Kim K’s most memorable social media moments.
Her First Posts
Kardashian West joined Twitter on March 21, 2009, and Instagram on February 20, 2012. These posts mark the beginning of the media mogul’s online journey, as over 100 million people now follow her.
Engagement Announcement
Kanye West proposed to the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star on her 33rd birthday at AT&T Field in San Francsico, accompanied by a 50 piece orchestra and friends and family waiting in the dugouts. The following day, she shared a photo of her 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz engagement ring with West’s request to “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEEE!!!” on the field’s scoreboard captioned with her answer: “YES!!!”
Wedding Photos
When the couple tied the knot on May 24, 2014, their Italian wedding ceremony was an uncharacteristically private affair, free from any reality TV camera crews or even snaps taken by guests. Weeks before the wedding, Kardashian Tweeted that the event would not be filmed for KUWTK, further piquing the interest of fans and those who wanted to see the extravagant nuptials. Followers had to wait until three days later, when the newlywed posted pictures of her and the groom’s unforgettable ceremony.
When She Broke the Internet
Sharing her cover of an independent magazine, Kardashian West fully embraced the media’s fascination with her figure. Photographed by the legendary Jean-Paul Goude, the semi-nude image became one of the most memorable in pop-culture history as millions of people either commended, criticized, or meme-ified it.
Baby Name Reveals
Since North West’s birth in 2013, the Kardashian West clan has continued to grow with the additions of Saint in 2015, Chicago in 2018, and Psalm in 2019. Although North was welcomed with a traditional announcement, the younger siblings’ names were revealed to the public via Kardashian West’s Twitter account and her now shuttered website. While she’s openly proclaimed the birth of several of her children on the same day, her followers usually have to wait weeks for the name announcements and first pictures, leaving plenty of time for people to speculate and stir up anticipation.
Surrogacy Rumors Confirmed
Ahead of the 14th season of KUWTK, Kardashian West Tweeted a teaser for the show in which she reveals that she and Kanye are expecting their third child. While speaking with her sister Khloe Kardashian via FacetTime, Kim asks, “What happens every time I say, ‘Guess what?’” Her sister replies, “You’re pregnant or the person’s pregnant?” Kim confirms, “We’re having a baby!”–finally putting to rest the rumors that had been making the rounds on social media for weeks. After two difficult pregnancies with placenta accreta, a condition that makes the placenta’s detachment from uterine lining during birth dangerous and painful, Kardashian West opted to hire a surrogate for Chicago’s birth. It then came as no surprise that her fourth child, Psalm, would also be carried by a surrogate.
The Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift Feud
Ten years ago, West took the stage during Taylor Swift’s Best Female Video acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, interrupting her to declare that Beyoncé should have won the Moon Man. Since then, the pair have been feuding as more fuel gets added to the fire. In 2016, West released the track “Famous” in which he raps, “For all my Southside niggas that know me best / I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex / Why I made that bitch famous.” West received backlash for the lyric from Swift’s friends and fans on social media, even though he claimed that he received permission from the singer. As the argument continued, Kardashian West stepped in to defend her husband, also saying that Swift had approved the lyric. After the release of the “Famous” music video–which showed a sculpture resembling Swift sleeping beside the Kardashian Wests and other famous figures–further inflamed the situation, Kim posted recordings of a phone call between the rapper and singer to her Snapchat. She even teased it on Twitter beforehand:
In the now-vanished Snapchat footage, Swift can be heard saying, “It’s like a compliment,” after West reads the lyric about her. However, the singer’s representative maintained that Swift had never heard the line, “I made that bitch famous.”
Her Foray Into Politics and Law
Recently, Kardashian West has gained attention for helping affect change in criminal justice reform by meeting with the White House regarding Alice Marie Johnson’s clemency, and for pursuing her law degree and studying for the California state bar. Her journey to the capital began with an article about Johnson’s prison sentence that she shared with her millions of Twitter followers. Not even a year after first meeting with President Trump, first daughter Ivanka Trump, and Ivanka’s husband and the president’s senior advisor Jared Kushner to discuss criminal justice reform, Kardashian West successfully worked to commute Johnson’s sentence, sharing the victory with her Twitter followers.
Facing doubt from many on social media, Kardashian West has been transparent about her determination to become a lawyer. On Instagram, she shared the countless hours she needs to study and the sacrifices she’s making to prepare for the baby bar this year.
Eyes for Kanye, While Married to Kris Humphries
In April 2019, Kardashian West posted a photo of her and West from her time filming Kourtney and Kim Take New York, with a caption expressing that she had always viewed the rapper as more than just friend. While fans initially admired the picture, some pointed out that the time the photo was taken around the time she was briefly married to Kris Humphries and West was dating Amber Rose, implying that the couple may have been having an affair. The Kardashian Wests both maintained that they didn’t begin a romantic relationship until they were both single, even though their previous partners have both voiced their doubts in the past. Despite what the truth may be, Kardashian West’s Instagram post yet again caused a social media stir among fans and critics alike.
