Dree Hemingway On Her Skincare Routine and Being a Paco Rabanne Muse

In 2010, Dree Hemingway starred in the very first campaign for Lady Million, the sister fragrance of Paco Rabanne‘s wildly popular—and wildly successful—men’s cologne, 1 Million. Clad in the Parisian fashion house’s signature chain mail, the model, actress, and great-granddaughter of Ernest Hemingway sexily snapped her way to a life of luxury. Five years later, in 2015, Hemingway appeared in yet another campaign for the brand, memorably dripping in gold as she seduced model Matt Gordon and channeled a Bond girl. Now, the fashion star has returned for Paco Rabanne’s new ‘Million Nation’ campaign, set to launch next month.

In it, Hemingway appears alongside five other stars, including rapper Joey Badass, Levi Dylan (actor and grandson to Bob Dylan), dancer-turned-model Alton Mason, and rising models Simona Kunst and Londone Myers. Set to the tune of Sugarhill Gang’s seminal “Rapper’s Delight,” the campaign is fresher than ever, but still features house signatures like the famous snapping motif, shimmering metallics, and, well, Hemingway, who, despite donning a newly buzzed haircut (a byproduct of her role in the upcoming thriller-drama Run with the Hunted), looks no less sultry. Ahead of the campaign, CR catches up with the multi-hyphenate and longtime Paco Rabanne muse to talk perfume, skincare, and the one scent on a man that drives her crazy.

You were the face of Paco Rabanne’s inaugural campaign for Lady Million almost a decade ago. How does it feel to be part of it again?
“They’ve been my family forever, but I hadn’t [worked] with them in a really long time. It was nice for them to want me back—even with short hair.”

Why do you think fragrance is so essential to some people? What kind of powers does perfume wield?
“I think fragrance can create some kind of mystery or untold story. Scent holds memories and can dictate them, too.”

What scent makes you feel nostalgic? Is there a specific fragrance that transports you back to a certain person or a really fond memory?
“Jasmine and fig. [The notes] remind me of my mother. My grandmother used to wear this coral lipstick by Clinique that had a certain smell to it. She drank gin and tonics, so she kind of smelled like a Clinique gin and tonic. She also used to make grilled cheeses and English breakfast [tea] with milk and Sweet’n Low. The combination of gin and tonics, grilled cheeses, English breakfast tea, and Clinique coral lipstick all make this one specific smell. It’s grandma. And it’s great.”

What was your very first perfume?
“L’Occitane room spray in vanilla. I think I was in middle school. Perfume wasn’t really a thing in Idaho. It wasn’t until I moved to California and was around girls who shaved their legs and wore eye makeup and brushed their hair [that I wore it].”

What’s your favorite scent on a man? What drives you crazy when you smell it on the street?
“Pheromones. Subtlety is important. I’m not a huge fan of an overpowering scent on a man. I liked just their soap—’man’ soap—or how their clothing smells. A man doused in a lot of things is just the worst and too much. That said, Tom Ford’s Oud Wood is quite good on a man.”

Why do you think 1 Million has been such a blockbuster fragrance for men?
“I think it might be the most iconic fragrance of all time. Everybody knows the Paco fragrance. It has some weird memory or staple in it. Whether it be attached to the scent or not, everyone has some memory of it, which is quite cool. I’ve done a lot of the men’s fragrance campaigns as well, and people get this shocked look like, ‘You’re the girl covered in gold?!’ The men’s fragrance this year has kind of been punked up a little bit. It’s a little hipper now. It’s kind of cool. I like to look at men’s fragrances as, like, would I want to date that guy? And a lot of the men in the fragrance world I don’t want to date, but I might want to date one of these guys. I don’t know. They’re cool and they’ve got something that’s a little bit more festive. They’re sexy, and I want to embody that.”

What’s currently in your makeup bag?
“I found recently that I very much enjoy tinted moisturizer. I mix [Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer] and with 50 SPF sunscreen. I like Milk’s Lip + Cheek on my cheeks. It’s so subtle and it doesn’t have coconut oil in it. I hate coconut oil because it breaks you out if you have acne-prone skin. I like a Dior eyeshadow. I’ve gotten into putting only a little eyeshadow under my eyes at night, which might have stemmed from a picture of Stella Tennant in the ’90s when she wore dark black under there. I have to find inspiration where I can during this growing-out-my-hair period, and [Stella’s] been nice to me. I dabble in lip stain, but I’m not really a fan of lipstick. I’m more of a Chapstick human being. Also, I don’t like going over the lip with anything and I don’t like a lip liner. I’m convinced that if I wear too much makeup I look like JonBenét Ramsey or Little Miss Sunshine. Charlotte Tilbury gave me this highlighter, but I thought it was a concealer. I was putting it everywhere and I was just really shiny. I was walking around everywhere looking like the moon.”

What’s your stranded-on-a-desert-island skincare product?
“I’m a lover of masks. Lots of them. I like a sheet mask, but not as much as I like putting on, like, a full mask. I like it to be really heavy because I want to look like a cartoon character. Like that old woman with cucumbers on her eyes. Who was she?”

Cruella de Vil?
“Yes. She’s fantastic. I want it to be really goopy. I like clay masks. I like all hydrating masks. I like a zinc mask and if I’m breaking out I’ll wear it to bed on the [problem] areas. I have a very good routine of face wash, toning spray, then a serum, an eye cream, and a sunscreen every morning. Same thing at night, but I replace the sunscreen with a face moisturizer.”

What about cosmetics?
“I don’t do makeup that often. I feel like when you do makeup, you need to pair it down. Either the makeup needs to be the statement or the outfit needs to be the statement. I don’t like foundation on my face—ever. Eyeshadow and lipstick are fun to play with, but I don’t want to be caked in. I used to wear bronzers all the time, but I don’t really anymore. I love brown mascara more than anything because I always want it to look like makeup is not on my face. Like I fell into something nice, but was naturally born like that.”

What complexion rules do you swear by?
“Number one is don’t pick your pimples ever. Even if there’s a whitehead, just leave it. I’ve shown up to photoshoots and they were like, ‘It’s there.’ I’m like, you can put cream on it, but do not pop it.’ Laura Mercier

won’t break out your skin if yours is acne-prone. Armani foundation is the best, too. And Clé de Peau.”

Who were you most excited to star in the campaign with?
“Joey [Badass]. I was like, ‘I’m living a dream right now. You don’t know this, sir, but I am here, living my best fantasy right now.’”

If you could star in any rapper’s music video, whose would it be?
“Frank Ocean’s. I guess he’s not really a ‘rapper,’ but he’s amazing. Kendrick Lamar is amazing. I really really, really, really, really like Mick Jenkins. I love the music video for ‘Lemon’ by N.E.R.D and Rihanna. When I was filming Run with the Hunted and buzzed my head, I attempted to be [Mette Towley], who has the most insane, wicked body I’ve ever seen in my life. I don’t own any of those gorgeous curves and it looks funny when I do that dance, but that was magical. [Towley] is amazing and she has a buzzed head. I love her so much.”
