Viral Beauty: Discover These FX Makeup Looks for Halloween

Halloween is upon us and it looks a bit different.

Although October 31 is just a few days away, restrictions around the world have forced us to get creative with how we celebrate the spookiest day of the year.

Traditionally, a fun eye look and a cute costume are the way to go when hitting clubs and bars downtown. This year now that there’s extra time on everyone’s hands, it’s the perfect chance to experiment and take risks with ghoulish looks.

After too many hours manifesting on witchtok and scrolling through old celebrity archives, there’s a trend that’s caught our eye: FX makeup.

What started in the 1930’s as a realistic way to portray facial deformities in the Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame, the special effects makeup trend has crossed over into the mainstream. Before, FX artists were a hidden gem in the beauty community, but larger creators are paying homage to their artistry.

Earlier this week, YouTube beauty guru James Charles sat down with Kylie Jenner to do her Halloween makeup, inspired by her latest Kylie Cosmetics cheetah collection.

Although it isn’t the first time the beauty influencer does special FX makeup on his channel, it is the first time in recent history he’s done a transformation for a celebrity.

To celebrate Halloween, CR is rounding up our favorite FX Instagram beauty gurus. A quick look through these artists’ feeds and you’ll feel horrible about not being able to do a proper eyeliner wing.
