As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.
Andy LeCompte’s hairstyling career has brought him around the world, most recently for Madonna’s Madame X tour. With transformations that have to happen in a flash, he has become a master at crafting curls and wigs that can last through the star’s high-octane performance. But before he was responsible for Madonna’s mane, LeCompte began his career at Privé salon at 18 years old. He went on to do editorial work with renowned photographers including Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino, and opened his own eponymous Hollywood salon in 2008. While Madonna is at the top of his client list, Miley Cyrus, Penélope Cruz, Katie Holmes, and Salma Hayek have also sought out his talent for creating vintage-inspired, full-bodied curls and perfectly tousled waves.
Here, LeCompte fills CR in on his haircare tips, favorite tools, and what he’s learned from working with Madonna.
What’s your daily haircare routine?
“I have two routines. I usually get a Brazilian blowout so my hair is a little straighter. To maintain that, I blow-dry my hair and use a little bit of Rodin face oil to give it some texture. Then if my Brazilian grows out, and I start getting nappy roots, I’ll use a little bit of Oribe Rock Hard Gel to mold it down.”
What about skincare?
“I usually wash my face in the shower using warm water, and then will use the MDNA eye serum and the MDNA beauty roller. I’ve been using the Dr. Barbara Sturm anti-aging serum, I’ll put that around my nose and any dry spots, and I also use the beauty roller for that. Once in a while I’ll use the MDNA eye defy eye mask as well, but that’s not a daily thing.”
For hair, how would describe your aesthetic?
“I like beautiful, clean hair. I like natural waves, but I am also versatile with the client. I like to collaborate with them and do whatever they want to create. I believe hairstyling starts with a good shampoo and conditioner, and I use very little hair products. I’ll often times use a leave-in conditioner to prep the hair. Then I’ll style the hair and finish using the MDNA rose mist spray, and that breaks up the hair and gives it a natural texture. For something really slick and shiny like Madonna’s super tight buns, I’ll use the Cool Grease Double XX. A lot of times, I’ll use the Paw Paw lip balm for a little bit of detail and shine on the edges.”
What are some go-to tools that you use?
“I love the Balmain wide-tooth comb–it’s 14-karat gold. I live for the Sheila Stotts detangling brush. I use that over the Mason Pearson. And the Pro Arte small bristle brush, which is what I use to smooth the hair.”
You’ve worked with Madonna for quite a while. What have you learned from working with her?
“I’ve been working with Madonna for 17 years, and we’ve done so many looks. She’s such an icon and creative genius, I’ve picked up a lot of tricks along the way from her and the people she works with. She always pushes me to reinvent myself and reinvent her hair. Seventeen years is a long time and there have been a lot of albums, a lot of tours—I’ve done six tours. Bringing some of the looks that we’ve done on photoshoots and music videos to life onstage has been a very interesting and fascinating process.”
Do you have a favorite look you’ve done on her?
“I am very proud of this tour. It’s very different than any other, because we had never used wigs on tours. It’s been a lot of rehearsals. The blunt spy wigs were really fun to create–like a 1940s Hollywood set. Also, her bohemian style with the long braids, that was fun to collaborate and work on with her and Steven Klein and Arianne Phillips.”
Do you have a favorite decade for hair?
“I love old references. I love when we do something from the ‘20s and ‘30s. Short finger waves are really fun to create.”
Do you have a favorite Madonna song?
“From [the Madame X] album, ‘I Don’t Search I Find.’”
