As far as we know, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.

Mai Quynh is the makeup artist responsible for many of the glamorous red carpet looks of Chloë Grace Moretz and Allison Brie, as well as polished editorial work with Elizabeth Olsen and Camila Mendez. But even before she began doing makeup for red carpet regulars, Hollywood was always within reach for the California-native. Quynh grew up in the San Fernando Valley, worked at a Mac Makeup counter at the Topanga mall, attended makeup school in Hollywood, and assisted industry veterans such as Pati Dubroff and the late Paul Starr, prior to developing her own star-studded client list. She’s never afraid to play with a colorful eye or lip, and her bold approach to makeup has made Quynh a go-to guru for Gen-Z celebs like Moretz, Paris Jackson, and Diana Silvers.

Here, the makeup artist shares her daily beauty regimen, her love of vintage inspo, and the beauty trends she cops and drops.

Do you prioritize beauty or skincare?
“I used to be strictly about beauty, and dabbled in skincare, but now I feel like the older I get, it makes such a difference to take care of your skin. I was blessed to have good skin, so I didn’t really have to think about it too much. As I get older, I see that I’m getting tired in some areas and wrinkles in others. Growing up in California, I used to sunbathe a lot, and back then no one pressured you to wear sunblock, so now I’m seeing the sun damage. Skincare has become so important to me, and I never leave the house without sunblock or a hat. But I still love makeup, and that’s my true calling.”

What’s your daily skincare routine?
“I start with an essence like the La Prairie Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion and then I’ll do a serum, like a Clé de Peau wrinkle serum. As far as moisturizer, I’ll use Dr. Lancer or La Mer, whatever I have that’s handy. Then I’ll use a tinted moisturizer, there’s one by Clé de Peau that has SPF 50 but it also has color. I’m pretty minimal for day to day.

What about makeup?
“I curl my eyelashes–I love the Clé de Peau mascara. I’ll fill in my eyebrows using an eyebrow pencil from a brand called Kate Tokyo. Then I use a Jill Stuart powder blush in #17, and swirl the brush around to pick up all the colors. And concealer-wise, I really like the Giorgio Armani Power Fabric Concealer. If I go out, I’ll wear a bit more, but that’s all I do for day to day.”

Where do you like to draw inspiration from?
“I love anything like ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s. Right now, I’ve been seeing a lot of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood stuff and I love Sharon Tate. She was so beautiful and had such an amazing look as far as the way she did her eyelashes and the way she wore her eyeshadow and eyeliner, so I really love seeing that. I also love Studio 54. It just depends. I think all those eras had a look, where you can look at the makeup and differentiate them. Currently, grunge is back and everyone is about the ’90s. I was in high school then, and it was my favorite. Seeing that come back is so funny. I love all those eras.”

Do you have any makeup trends that you love?
“I love when people do an eye that’s a wash of color that’s a little bit different. Instead of a neutral brown, they’re doing pinks or a funkier color.”

What about a least favorite beauty trend?
“I’m over everyone’s brows looking like the same rectangular, squared shape, because not everybody has that naturally. Sometimes you see the brows of a girl who you know for sure doesn’t have that brow shape, but they feel like that’s what beauty is at the moment and that they have to fit in. I’m always a huge fan of taking everyone’s individuality and uniqueness and trying to make them look like themselves. I think it’s so important to celebrate that, yet everyone wants to look the same.”
