While most go for super strength or x-ray vision, after watching Saint Laurent’s recently released short film titled French Water, our ideal superpower is now having the ability to magically change into designer clothes. Saint Laurent has taken inspiration from French Cinema and Sci-Fi dramas for a Spring/Summer 2021 short directed by Jim Jarmusch and featuring stars like Julianne Moore, Chloë Sevigny, and Indya Moore.
YSL initially drummed up anticipation for their French inspired production via a twenty-second Instagram video. The snippet featured a breathless waiter watching a woman, almost as if he’s conflicted, while she chugs champagne and tosses the flute over her shoulder. In the full-length film, things get a lot more peculiar and artistically captivating.
In the aftermath of a dinner party, a lone waiter, played by Leo Reilly, watches as mysterious and very well dressed guests search for the ever elusive Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Throughout the nine minute film, looks from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection magically appear and disappear among the lost party guests. An element that waiter Reilly promptly notices and seems to take a trance-like enamorment to. At one point, Indya, dressed in a button down wool coat and golden dragonfly chain necklace stops to chat with Reilly and have a sip of water— water he makes sure to note is “from France.” The brief exchange ends with Reilly’s curiosity for the ever-changing clothes peaking as Indya walks away now dressed in a YSL tailored jacket, biker shorts, and patterned scarf.
Creative Director of Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello, trusted Jarmusch to “orchestrate a dreamy, surreal ballet.” An almost eerie soundtrack performed by Noveller and The Brian Jonestown Massacre guides the neon lighted scenes while jump cuts and close up shots add to the beauty of this artistic world.
French Water proves once again that fashion has entered the height of digital and experimental collections and allow presentations to extend far beyond what can be achieved on the runway. Jarmusch and Vaccarello have certainly seen to it that the future of fashion is not limited to the triviality of space or time. Never did we think wandering around in designer could be so interesting—or make us so thirsty.
French Water will debut on April 15th on YSL.com.
