At the heart of Giambattista Valli’s collection is an interrelatedness between historical influences and Valli’s own story. An Italian designer himself, Valli is constantly torn between his homeland and his current love, Paris. How better to visualize such a powerful blend of cultures than through the collection’s muse, Pauline Bonaparte Borghese?
Borghese was an imperial French princess known for her connection to Napoleon—they were siblings. Later, Borghese was married into the Roman aristocracy, becoming an Italian Duchess. While Valli and Borghese’s stories are not exactly parallel, their cross-pollination of sorts between Parisian and Roman cultures yielded a playful blend of femininity in Valli’s clothing with Borghese as muse.
Not to mention scandal. Pauline Bonaparte Borghese was a sexually free Parisian woman (as much as a female could be at the time), comfortable in her naked form and unwilling to conform with the Roman conservativeness. Despite the two-hundred year difference, Valli noticed a similar cultural discrepancy between Parisian and Roman women, though less extreme.
Giambattista Valli’s collection is all about channeling Borghese’s boundary-pushing energy through various aesthetic elements. Pops of black, sheer florals, and many, many mini dresses make up Valli’s sixty looks for fall and winter. Refined silhouettes are adorned with dramatic sleeves, playful prints, and dark embellishments. The scandalous nature of Borghese is channeled through cheeky glimpses at undergarments or bare skin by the use of sheer fabric placement.
