Want to know your future? For the house of Dior’s latest collection, Creative Director Maria Grazia Churi enlisted the help of Director Matteo Garrone for a Haute Couture presentation all about the celestial beauty of tarot cards and their symbolic influence on the house in a short film titled “Le Château du Tarot.”
The mysterious fairytale filled with strongly defined characters is inspired by the 15th-century illuminated tarot deck Visconti-Sforza. The divine deck of cards was designed for the Duke of Milan. Where in Garrone’s short film, the girl’s unlocks her innermost fortunes of her self-journey when she chooses La Papesse or the high priestess signifying spirituality, inner illumination, and divine knowledge. Inside the chateau, we encounter a number of diverse characters such as the Fool, Temperance, the Hanged Man, and the Devil to name a few all dressed in medieval couture clothes with gold thread, cinched waistlines, empire necklines, Bar jacket, velvet black suit, gold jacquard cape, floral appliques, midnight blue silk gowns, and the zodiac embroidered coat. To conclude the girl reaches self-awareness through rebirth in the enchanted castle in looks illustrated by Pietro Ruffo.
The enchanting story of destiny is at the heart of the couture house which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The superstitious designer Monsieur Christian Dior apparently stepped on a tarot card with a gold star in 1946. This tarot card remained Dior’s lucky charm and influenced him to launch his couture house. He had his lucky talismans like the number 8, hearts, and clovers. Ever since, Dior had his tarot cards read to him before every runway show for the rest of his life.
This high point of zodiac mysticism showcases couture in a storyline that came to life to entertain us at home. Tapping deep into Dior’s history has been key to understanding Churi’s leadership and creative direction. The tarot inspired evening dresses were spotted in Spring/Summer 2017 and Fall/Winter 2017. In Dior’s Cruise 2018 collection, Churi incorporated tarot of Motherpeace’s feminist tarot cards where the illustrations by Niki de Saint Phalle were woven into gowns, skirts, and blouses.
The fashion industry needs a touch of luck in these hard times, luxury houses like Dior have had to plan collections and carry out fittings for Haute Couture clients via zoom. Not to mention all the missed chances fashion editors, clients, influencers and buyers have experienced by not experiencing any interaction with any brand up close during runway shows. Dior is spreading its magical stars over all of us where we are still under lockdown to eradicate the virus for good.
