Madonna to Direct and Co-Write Her Own Biopic

Living legend Madonna will be at the helm of her own biopic. Taking the directorial reins, she will also co-write the story alongside Academy Award-winning Diablo Cody, the screenwriter behind cult-followed films Juno and Jennifer’s Body. The currently untitled film will chart her personal life, as well as chronicle her fantastical journey to mega-fame. For decades, Madonna has been recognized as a talented singer, songwriter, actress, author, director, and record executive. Now, she can add screenwriter and film producer to her illustrious multi-hyphenate list of titles. Set to produce alongside a team including Little Women producer and three-time Academy Award nominee Amy Pascal, Madonna’s untold true story will come to our screens courtesy of Universal Pictures.

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer–a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” Madonna said in a statement. “The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”

The pop icon teased script sessions with Cody via Instagram, asking followers in the caption, “Are you ready for the story of my life…Am I?” and divulging, “I keep forgetting that I’m writing about myself. I can’t make this shit up! But in fact, I don’t need to. The truth will set you free and (can) also be devastating!”

The creative renegade’s plan to pen her personal story from her very own point of view has been considered an unprecedented move. While international superstars are typically indirectly involved with the production of biopics depicting their lives, often called upon as “creative consultants,” Madonna has most certainly shoved her hand deep in the cookie jar, taking on as much responsibility as possible.
