Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello commissions designer and artist Helmut Lang for Saint Laurent’s artistic outpost, the Rive Droite project. In pursuit of fresh ideas and expansion of the French maison’s identity, Vaccarello looked to the deconstructivist, whose precise fabrication has long had implicit influence on his work.

Since his foray into fine art in 2005, Lang has harnessed his exceptional ability to convert items, whether raw or discarded, into works of art. Past collection collaborations with Saint Laurent coupled with the visionary’s distinct creative philosophy provided for an ideal merging of the inventive entities. The leg of the project, titled “Anthony Vaccarello x Helmut Lang,” explores a shared concern for the future of fashion and the world.

Former fashion objects are reinterpreted through sculpture. Neglected clothing and accessory prototypes, garments, and jewels are mixed with resin and cast in aluminum to breathe life into otherwise forgotten goods. Constructed into a new form of applied art, the articles become “primal totems with unique textures reminiscing both, a precious past and a promising future.”

While Vaccarello and Lang have admiration for one another’s design ideology, the two creatives also take interest in modern issues like sustainability, longevity, and the perpetual movement of the fashion cycle. For this reason, Saint Laurent dotes that “Vaccarello has found the perfect interlocutor for a project that is also a dialogue.”

The Helmut Lang x Anthony Vaccarello sculptures will be on view first at Saint Laurent Rive Droite in Paris, France before being showcased in Los Angeles, California. The artworks from the collaboration will be for sale.
