Haute Couture is the crème de la crème of fashion’s elite, the pinnacle of luxury. Considered the “founding father of Haute Couture,” English designer Charles Frederick Worth was responsible for creating the outline for which couture is defined by today, establishing his fashion house in 1858. The official standards were then set by Le Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in 1945 to ensure that couture creations are held to the utmost standards, with the highest quality materials and peak craftsmanship. To be considered Haute Couture, an atelier must employ at least 20 artisans, create made-to-order designs for a private clientele with multiple fittings, and present a minimum of 50 pieces in a collection consisting of both day and evening wear to the press in Paris twice a year.
