Willow Smith will be encasing herself in a glass box for 24 hours in the name of art. The performance piece, which begins tonight at 9 p.m. PST and will take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles, will display the 19-year-old singer going through eight stages of anxiety. She will be accompanied by her creative collaborator and rumored boyfriend Tyler Cole in the box.

Smith recently opened up about her personal experiences with anxiety, sharing that it stems from feeling out of control and fear of the unknown. This fueled one of the core messages of the performance: that accepting one’s fears is “the first step toward understanding.”

She and Cole will spend three hours in each emotional state associated with anxiety–paranoia, rage, sadness, numbness, euphoria, strong interest, compassion, and acceptance–and won’t be allowed to speak during the installation’s duration. Canvases will cover three walls of the box, so Smith and Cole can express themselves through painting or writing as visitors look on through the glass wall. The audience will be allowed 15 minutes to view Smith and Cole before proceeding to a room with a video feed of the performance, self-help books, and donation stations for mental health organizations. There will also be live stream of the installation online.

“I’m doing this because I’m inspired by this idea and I see that anxiety around me is an epidemic and people don’t talk about it,” Smith Said. “And so as long as it’s bringing awareness and a positive light to the darkness, it doesn’t matter if you don’t enjoy it.”
