The first Monday in May will go on without the annual Met Gala this year. It was announced today that the star-studded celebration and opening of the Costume Institute’s About Time: Fashion and Duration exhibition is postponed indefinitely due to the current coronavirus pandemic.
The Met Gala is one of the most anticipated nights in fashion. Last year’s camp-themed fête spared no theatrics with Lady Gaga revealing not one but four outfit changes on the pink carpet, Céline Dion wearing a sparkling Judy Garland-inspired custom Oscar de la Renta ensemble, and a surprise performance from CR star and all-around icon Cher.
This year’s exhibition will center on a sartorial timeline from 1870 to the present, framed by the philosophy of Henri Bergson and writings of Virginia Woolf. While we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see what this entails, the museum has shared that 120 fashions will be on view to represent 60 minutes of fashion. The pieces will be presented in pairs based on shape, motif, material, pattern, technique, or decoration, with one garment exemplifying the linear nature of fashion, and the other its cyclical nature. The concluding section of About Time: Fashion and Duration will focus on the future of fashion, exploring discussions about longevity and sustainability.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, where the gala and exhibition are hosted, is among a number of cultural institutions around the world that have temporarily closed in efforts to slow the spread of the pandemic. The Met has decided that the museum will remain closed through April 4, and all programs and events will be canceled or postponed through May 15.
