At-Home Facials Don’t Have to be Done Alone

As social media and online platforms become the new communal gathering spaces in light of the coronavirus’ self-quarantining measures, those in the beauty realm are finding new ways to engage with their clients and provide their services. For New York-based esthetician Sofie Pavitt, this means hosting weekly guided facials via Instagram Live.

Creating a community around skincare is nothing new for Pavitt. The esthetician has been hosting guided facials in her Manhattan studio for several years now, inviting clients, friends, coworkers, or other intimate gatherings for a group facial experience. At these sessions, Pavitt walks guests through the steps of a facial, sometimes focusing on specific skincare concerns or practices like microneedling or gua sha. Now, she is essentially doing the same for her Instagram audience, allowing her and her viewers to connect with others looking for a dose of self-care and skincare advise. “Having a facial routine can be very ceremonial and calming for some people,” Pavitt tells CR. “So having that time and having everybody do it together makes you feel a bit less isolated.”

The facialist has hosted two of her Sunday sessions to date, which go live at 6 p.m. EST. The first covered the basics, walking through the essential steps of a facial: cleansing, exfoliating, applying a mask, toning, using a hydrating serum, and moisturizing. According to Pavitt, each live stream will focus on a specific aspect of the facial or a new add-on. This past Sunday’s went on a deep-dive into exfoliants. Throughout the guided facial, the esthetician, who was joined virtually by beauty writer Rio Viera-Newton, answered viewers’ questions, recommended products, and outlined the steps of her AHA-boosted routine.

Pavitt also wants to help people squash bad skincare habits that are more harmful in the long run. “The one thing I tell people to do is to throw away the magnifying mirror. Those things are terrible,” she says. “The devil always makes work for idle hands. You can sit and and fall into a trance about picking [your blemishes] and then never stop, and while we’re at home it’s really easy to do.” Having a skincare regimen can provide routine and structure while many are looking for ways to pass the time at home, however, fixating on each pore isn’t constructive, and as Pavitt points out, “no one is looking at your skin in macro like that ever–except [for facialists] when doing extractions.” Which, by the way, are not a DIY treatment and should be left to the professionals.

The esthetician also advises that while facials are necessary to maintain skin health, they aren’t an everyday indulgence and once a week should suffice. While some may be inclined to slap on a face mask for some at-home R&R, “nobody should be masking every single day,” Pavitt says. “That’s just silly and a waste of a mask and can actually lead to breakouts.” Instead, she suggests adding some variety to your self-care: “Do your nails one day, shave your legs the next, do a facial the next day, do a hair mask the next. Focus on a different area everyday instead of it always being on your face.”

For those that want a professional, personalized experience, Pavitt offers online consultations. Video chatting one-on-one with clients, the esthetician is able to provide targeted suggestions and treatment plans.

Other skincare professionals are also digitally adapting their services. Celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas set up a text subscription so those who opt-in can receive her beauty and skincare advice straight to their phone. Dr. Barbara Sturm recently took to Instagram to offer her community of followers a giveaway consisting of individual regimen recommendations and even product samples. Virtual consultations are also being offered by other top names in the industry such as Joanna Czech and Ildi Pekar. So while many are taking their skincare into their own hands, there are plenty of resources to not face it alone.
