Maison Margiela’s Tabi is Now a Reebok Sneaker

Maison Margiela’s iconic Tabi shoe got a sporty makeover at the Artisanal Spring/Summer 2020 show in Paris this morning. Creative director John Galliano presented the new style, a collaborative sneaker made with Reebok that crosses the athletic wear brand’s Instapump Fury with the French maison’s bifurcated silhouette.

While Margiela’s Tabi—which takes its name from the Japanese socks of the same divided style—have walked the runway in many iterations over the years, from a sole with clear packing tape to leather over-the-knee boots, this new version is its most dramatic transformation yet. As the comfort and appeal of ugly sneakers has taken over fashion in recent years, Galliano didn’t just give into the trend but adapted it for Margiela’s subversive house codes. Alongside classic Tabis, the double branded hybrid sneaker made its way down the couture runway in several color ways, including solid black, monochrome white, and two three-tone combinations. In addition to the traditional high-top, The Instapump Fury’s signature rubber sole was also lifted for a heeled silhouette, too. The unisex sneakers were paired with the maison’s latest lineup of deconstructed, androgynous fashion, giving a jolt of streetwear to the couture designs.

Margiela isn’t the Instapump Fury’s first crossover with high fashion, however, as Demna Gvsalia doodled on a pair for the Vetements Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Collaborative sneakers have become a trend in the age of streetwear drops, with Off-White and Dior Men teaming up with Jordan Brand for Fall/Winter 2020. The Margiela X Reebok crossover also follows the athletic brand’s recent buzz-worthy clothing and accessories collaboration with Pyer Moss.
