Beyond the Trend: Techwear

START

Techwear–clothes developed for performance that offer breathability, comfort, and/or water-resistance–has always been a part of athletes’ wardrobes. From track stars that need lightweight layers to skiers that require mountain-ready gear to everything in between, the sporty styles serve a purpose. In fashion, techwear emerged in the 1960s as designers such as Pierre Cardin and André Courrèges used and developed new synthetic fabrics for their mod, space age fashion. Then, in the ’80s and ’90s spandex became a major component of techwear and ready-to-wear alike, as it provided ease of movement and support. Now, it has crossed over with the streetwear category, as the utility of techwear complements the cool yet casual feel of staples like windbreakers, anoraks, and joggers.
