Helmut Lang Muses Throughout History

START

Growing up in Vienna, Austria, a young Helmut Lang taught himself how to sew and design clothes. In 1986, at 30 years old, Lang debuted his first runway collection in Paris at the Centre Pompidou. Lang made a name for himself as a fresh and innovative designer of the late ’80s and ’90s. In 1997, the designer moved his brand to New York to cater to the tastemakers of the New York club scene during the end of the millennium. In 2005, Lang exited the brand and husband-and-wife Nicole and Michael Colovos took over, before leaving in 2014. Shaking things up in 2017, the brand decided to hire an editor-in-redsidence, Isabella Burley, and feature a rotation of creative directors. In the first collection after this change, the Helmut Lang brand made an exciting return under the leadership of designer Shayne Oliver, bringing the label back to the forefront of eccentric, boundary-pushing fashion. CR looks back at the women who have embodied these qualities throughout the brand’s lifespan.
