Lucky Blue Smith barely needs an introduction. The heartthrob, whose fronted campaigns for the likes of Tom Ford and Calvin Klein, as well as CR‘s own inaugural men’s issue, is famous for his boyishly-wide smile and bright blonde hair. He’s also a new father. After welcoming daughter Gravity this past July, Smith has been keeping his 3.3 million Insta followers scrolling with delight via adorable baby selfies taken around the world. CR caught up with the international it-boy to talk life as a dad, balancing both his home and the catwalk, and his dreams for the future. For the 21-year-old, it seems that luck truly is in his favor.

Did being a new father take some getting used to?
It’s crazy, but it’s fun. The biggest thing I’ve noticed so far is the type of motivation I’ve felt from just meeting one of your own. Before she was here, I was completely stressing out. When I was around babies in the past, I would get kind of nervous, so I didn’t know what to expect. But when I first met her, it was another story. Seeing your own is so powerful. It’s another you, so it’s very easy. Very Natural.

How has Gravity changed your daily and work life?
Everything in my mind now is like 30 times more serious. It’s a new level of pressure and accountability. I mean, of course there’s the “Oh, I can’t go out tonight because I have to take care of her,” but that helps me stay focused on my house and on my work. Before she was here, people would tell me that I wouldn’t see any of my friends at all after, but that’s not true at all. You have to keep that going and bring both worlds together. With work, it’s not that different. There are jobs that aren’t so major and before I’d do them, but now it’s like “Well, maybe it’s better to stay home and spend time with my daughter.”

What are you most nervous about for Gravity?
Boys. I’m so protective, even with my sisters. Not in a weird way, but I have always felt that duty. I can’t imagine what it’s going to be like when boys come to my house to hang out with my daughter. It’ll be chill…but at first I’m going to be like “Oh, this is interesting.”

Do you want your daughter to follow your path onto the runway?
I don’t know what she’s going to want to do, but I want her to know that even though I am in this industry and in entertainment, there is so much stuff out there besides that. I don’t want her to automatically think that she has to get into fashion because her dad was in it. If she wants to be an astronaut, do that! I want her to do whatever she wants. I don’t want to push her anywhere.

Other than Gravity (which is clearly a major life change!) what else is going on right now?
For the past few months I have been in Los Angeles working on film stuff. I’m not auditioning for anything right now, because the first impression is such an important thing and I don’t want to mess that up. I want to be extra prepared, so I am taking some time to do that. And then in like six months—at the end of March—I’ll start actually seeking out roles. It’s gnarly, people are like, “Oh, he’s a model trying get into this stuff,” so I’m trying to play it really strategically. Yes, it’s a challenge, but I love challenges.
