Alicia Keys Joins Stella McCartney to Fight Breast Cancer

Feminist, environmentalist, and animal rights activist Stella McCartney is known for making clothes you can feel good in, as well as feel good about, and her lingerie line is no different. Since 2014 the designer has been marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month (every October) with a pink bra and panties set that benefits the cause, and this year she’s getting a little help from Alicia Keys in her most personal campaign for the cause yet.

“Art and activism I feel always belong together,” the singer tells CR. “Every woman, no matter who you are, where you live, what you look like, what you believe in — all of us deserve access to a strong support network and we deserve highly skilled breast cancer care.”

The McCartney campaign features Keys wearing the new Ophelia Whistling set, a long-line soft-cup bra and matching bikini-cut panties, in poppy pink Japanese lace, as part of the designer’s Fall/Winter 2017 lingerie collection. Additionally, McCartney has created the Louise Listening post double mastectomy compression bra, from which all proceeds are going to the Hello Beautiful Foundation.

This year the project not only encourages women to get checked regularly, but it also highlights the inequalities in access to early detection and awareness among African American women, who have a 42 percent higher chance of cancer mortality from breast cancer than Caucasian women do. As such—in addition to supporting the Linda McCartney Centre, which provides treatment and support for breast cancer patients and their families—the campaign will also benefit the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Examination Center of Harlem, which offers free care and access to breast cancer screenings, mammograms, and a range of services including counseling and education.

The cause holds a special place in Keys’ heart, not only because she was born and raised in Harlem, but also because, as revealed above, her own mother was diagnosed with—and survived!—breast cancer. “I don’t think I’ve ever really gotten to share that story,” she explains. “So this is important to me.”

The Ophelia Whistling limited edition pieces will be available online and in Stella McCartney stores, as well as at select retailers, starting October 1, 2017.
