Emma Stone is speaking out about Hollywood’s ongoing gender imbalance. In an interview with Out Magazine on her upcoming film “Battle of the Sexes,” the actress revealed that her demands for equality have gotten some results. “In my career so far, I’ve needed my male co-stars to take a pay cut so that I may have parity with them,” Stone told Out. “And that’s something they do for me because they feel it’s what’s right and fair.”
“Battle of the Sexes” chronicles tennis legend Billie Jean King’s most famous match against male opponent Bobby Riggs in 1973. The match was watched by 50 million people in the U.S. at the height of the Women’s Liberation movement. King challenged Riggs after he made a litany of statements along the lines of ‘women should stay in the kitchen.’ Thankfully Billie won, thoroughly humiliating him. After the match, Riggs was so devastated he locked himself in his hotel room for four hours.
A movie about a chauvinist with a fragile ego going up against a strong female could not be anymore timely. The similarities were not lost on Stone. “We began shooting in the spring of 2016, when there was still a lot of hope in the air, and it was very interesting to see this guy—this narcissistic, self-focused, constantly-stirring-the-pot kind of guy—against this incredible, qualified woman” she said. “Obviously, the way this has all panned out has been fascinating and horrifying, and it still feels like we’re in a bad dream, but those parallels make sense to me.”
At the time of the storied tennis match Women’s Lib was pushing fiercely for equal pay. In fact there was a little remembered constitutional amendment called the “Equal Rights Amendment” proposed at the time. It would have settled the issue once and for all, but was never ratified. Hopefully the return of feminism to the forefront of popular culture will at last ensure that women get equal recognition to their male counterparts.
“Battle of the Sexes” will be in theaters September 22nd.
