An unknown model called Gisele Bündchen flew over from her native Brazil to work in Europe during the late ’90s—and the fashion world hasn’t looked the same since. At the age of 19, she made her international debut on Alexander McQueen’s Spring 1998 runway. She’s since been credited with making feminine curves popular again after a period that’s controversially referred to as “heroin chic.” Fast forward three decades and Gisele, who goes in and out of retirement, is among the highest-paid models in the world.
Her face was particularly ubiquitous in the 2000s when Bündchen fronted countless campaigns and graced the covers of just about every major magazine 10 times over. Some highlights from her golden era include wearing the million Fantasy Bra in the millennial edition of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and a supporting role playing a bitchy fashion assistant in The Devil Wears Prada alongside Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Here, we recount some of her most memorable runway moments in honor of her 41st birthday today. Warning: Prepare for a nostalgic dose of ’00s fashion overload.
