The New York City Ballet has tapped an unlikely team of designers for its sixth installment of the Fall 2017 Gala. Monse’s Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim will work in collaboration with Off-White’s Virgil Abloh, Tsumori Chisato, and Jonathan Saunders, who have all been chosen to take the lead on creative direction for this year’s costumes. In the past, Thom Browne, Carolina Herrera, Valentino, Olivier Theyskens, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton, have been tasked with the great honor.

To bridge together all of these different styles, the Monse and Off-White teams have been assigned a specific dancer to work with. Garcia and Kim will work directly with the Ballet’s principal dancer, Lauren Lovette, whose upcoming gala marks only her second event within the company. Abloh will oversee an even bigger task: designing the costumes for an entire ensemble, choreographed by Gianna Reisen. Chisato will also take on an ensemble set of costumes for a piece by choreographer, Justin Peck.

Since 2012, actress Sarah Jessica Parker has served as the gala’s event chair and overseer of the costume designer search. Last year, she gave the starring role to the American designer Narciso Rodriguez.

In addition, the Fall 2017 production will feature music by composers Lukas Foss for Reisen, Igor Stravinsky for Peck, Michael Nyman for Lovette, and William Walton for Schumacher. Also in tow is musician Peter Martin, who will stage his 1998 work titled “The Chairman” with set and costume design by Rouben Ter-Arutunian.
