When Cordell Broadus, son of Snoop Dogg and a budding creative director, met Tom Hirota, founder of Joyrich, the chemistry was instant. A visit to the Compound, Snoop Dogg’s workspace in Los Angeles, cemented a collaboration between the two. “It has old school photos of my pops throughout the whole building,” says Broadus. Hirota, who has facilitated collaborations with brands including Coca Cola in the past, hadn’t yet collaborated with an individual. The Compound changed that. “He was inspired by these photos to start a collection of the clothes my dad wore, but mixed with the new generation.”
Broadus acted as creative director for the collection, and also produced an intro video that’ll premiere on the runway. “It’s just a tiny bit of how creative we can get,” Broadus says of the film. Ahead of Joyrich x Snoop Dogg’s show at MADE LA this past Saturday, we spoke with Broadus about his fashion aspirations and personal style — we think we’ll be seeing more of him.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN FASHION?
“I’ve been interested in fashion. Growing up, I used to write ideas down for clothing lines. I would keep it to myself. With Tom I started to share my ideas.”
HOW DID GROWING UP IN L.A. WITH A FATHER IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY INFLUENCE YOUR SENSE OF STYLE?
“Growing up in LA, with my dad being who he is, it gave me more of an insight into how I want to brand myself. Watching various artists brand themselves, as well as my pops, whether it’s making fashion statements or just being who they are, with my dad so attached to marijuana, you know, that’s how he brands himself. I want to attach myself to being about fashion.”
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
“My personal style is influential, innovative, and smooth.”
WHAT’S YOUR BEST STYLING TRICK?
“Feeling good in the clothes I’m wearing. Once I feel good in the clothes I’m wearing, everybody else gonna like it. That’s how I feel.”
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY?
“I’m feeling myself as a creative director, and every project I work on, I want to have full creative control in every aspect, whether it’s the visuals, the clothes, the marketing strategy, or coming up with the ideas.”
DO YOU HAVE PLANS TO LAUNCH YOUR OWN LABEL?
“Yeah, we’re doing that. For people to understand what you’re doing, you have to give it to them in bits and pieces, so the Snoop Dogg x Joyrich collection is just a bit of what I can do creatively in film and fashion.”
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN THE COLLECTION?
“We have a mink, it’s so cool. You’re going to see it on Saturday. It has a “93” on the front for the year [Snoop Dogg’s album] “Doggystyle” dropped, and on the back it says “doggystyle.” Shit’s so hot.”
WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FASHION MUSES? WHO INSPIRES YOU?
“Nobody influences me, I just like the way people dress. I’m influenced by all types of things, but I just like how everybody has their own identity, whether it’s Jaden Smith, Wiz Khalifa, Chance the Rapper, people like that.”
WHAT’S YOUR FIRST FASHION MEMORY?
“It was at the I Heart Awards. I had gold glasses with gold frames, and I wore them to the I Heart Awards with my pops. We sat at the table with Taylor Swift, Jamie Foxx, Justin Timberlake, everybody gave me compliments for my glasses. I felt like I was doing something then.”
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?
“My dad told me nobody gone believe in anything as much as you believe it. You just gotta go with your gut and go a hundred with it. Because some people don’t see the vision you see. You gotta truly be yourself, and truly follow what your heart wants.”
