As part of MADE LA, Wiz Khalifa, better known as a rapper and weed entrepreneur, debuted his collaboration with Taylor Gang and the Los Angeles streetwear labels 424 and Pleasures. “It was a collaborative effort,” Khalifa says. “I feel like I reached out to more people who I trust their opinion, and made that a part of what we got going on. We just chose some really dope color ways and some dope materials and some good cuts — like the cuts are a little bit different, a little bit bigger. Not so much baggy but a little bigger than people are used to which I think is super cool.”
The collection benefits from an additional collaborator: the body scanning technology CALA, which measures the body for a custom fit. Customers can utilize the app for precise measurement, and receive custom-fit garments within days of ordering—it adds an altogether different and exciting element to see now, buy now.
The clothes, which include an entirely black and yellow section of oversized hoodies and racing check embellished track pants, made their runway debut alongside a concert from Khalifa and other members of Taylor Gang, also accompanied by a light show that ultimately brought to mind the high-tech scanning technology.
Khalifa, who, much like Snoop Dogg, has made marijuana a big part of his personal branding and style, has also forayed into marijua-ntrepreneurship via his strain, Khalifa Kush. And while this particular strain is “tasting really good night now,” he says as he takes a hit, according to the rapper, there is a new strain in the works. “We’re trying to cross some different shit,” he says.
Weed, hip-hop—Khalifa’s all about both, but there’s no denying his unique sense of personal style. He wears his open and printed silk shirts, his Saint Laurent jeans, with ease— a confidence that must have come partly from growing up as an army brat, moving frequently. “It let me know the difference between different crowds—how to be cool with the skaters, and how to wear hood shit, and how to dress preppy as well. I was able to get a whole mixture of all of that and make one cool, unique style,” Khalifa says.
But for the days he finds himself not entirely sartorially equipped, say without a belt, he’ll still figure it out. “If I don’t have a belt, I’ll loop the pants over, or use a shoestring for a belt. I like shoestring belts.”
