Standing behind a marble kitchen counter in a lofty Manhattan apartment from Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Listing, Salma Hayek is talking getting freaky with food. “Instead of giving ice cream to your date, you can become dessert instead. A body mask that tastes really good—now that’s sexy,” she says. The actress-come-entrepreneur is in town to promote her new line of Blend It Yourself smoothies (they double as face or body masks) that she’s created in partnership with raw food institution, Juice Generation. Joining the brand’s pre-existing fruit and vegetable-based offerings, you’re now able to order three perfectly portioned beauty blends via its online subscription service right to your door. Once received, it’s as easy as throwing one into your Vitamix with water or nut milk. The tricky part is deciding whether to drink the results like a regular smoothie, slather it on your face, or wear it à la Salma to bed.
Any doubts drummed up by another celebrity hawking a product are immediately erased by meeting Hayek in the flesh. In short, her radiant and practically wrinkle-free skin is extraordinary and it’s hard to believe that she’s spent a full five decades living on this earth. If she pitched a more extreme product, we’d likely give it a whirl, so there’s no reason to forgo taking this new tasty and entirely natural range for a spin. “By now, I’m 50 and I know a thing or two,” Hayek says, citing an avid appetite for beauty research that makes her more informed than the average shopper when it comes to all things skin. “You buy a cream that promises miracles in two weeks and nothing happens, but these masks are packed with nutrients that make results instantaneous and the real deal. You can notice a difference within 15 seconds.”
The idea for the dual-purpose line came from her grandmother. Growing up in Coatzacoalcos, a major port city on Mexico’s eastern coast, Salma used to watch her smash up leftover papaya and put it on her face. “She looked crazy because it wasn’t blended correctly, but when she washed it off I could see the results. She was kind of a witch, my grandmother,” recalls the actress. “She used plants to heal people and would make magical lotions for her skin.” Because of this history and heritage, all three mask-slash-smoothie blends contain ingredients indigenous to Salma’s home country and her grandmother’s kitchen. In one, you’ll find aloe vera (a plant famed for its soothing and healing properties), and nopal cactus, a prickly addition that Juice Generation’s recipe developer had to work hard to make taste good in a drink. In another blend, Salma chose to include hibiscus. Although more commonly brewed and sipped as a tea, the vibrant pink flower acts as an anti-inflammatory and brightens dull complexions. The third product in the lineup mixes papaya with avocado, lemon, and pumpkin seeds to gently slough away lackluster skin.
Salma is quick to confirm that she’s working on more edible beauty products with Juice Generation and just before she exits the kitchen for a photoshoot, she happily doles out a few more of her wellness anecdotes. Her top tips include drinking smoothies daily to help banish excess water weight, breathing techniques for relaxation, and downing a calcium and magnesium supplement before going to bed. The latter, she says, makes her sleep like a baby. “It helps me. It also helps me go to the bathroom,” she laughs with a parting wink. “You sleep well, you sh*t well—and everyone’s happy.”
