The MTV Movie Awards Go Gender Neutral

For its 2017 Movie Awards ceremony, MTV has scrapped gendered categories. Instead of celebrities competing for the title of either Best Actor or Actress in a Movie, for example, they will now go against each other in a category that combines nominees of all gender identities. In a slightly confusing twist, however, the new award will still be titled Best Actor in a Movie.
MTV’s decision follows controversy about gendered categories at this year’s Emmy’s. Billions star Asia Kate Dillon was born female, but does not identify as either male or female. In order to be considered for an award, the event’s organizers asked Dillon to choose between being nominated in the male or female category. In response, Dillon wrote an open letter to the Emmy’s Academy asking organizer’s to have greater sensitivity towards gender non-conforming people.
MTV’s decision is a significant step in the recognition of queer people, but it also has broader significance. Putting male and female actors together in a single category is recognition that the work of both genders has equal merit. The only other Hollywood awards ceremony that’s made similarly inclusive strides is the National Television Awards, which did away with separate male and female nominations back in 2008.
