Another facet of President Donald Trump’s business empire is crumbling. Today, news reports have revealed that his struggling modeling agency, Trump Model Management, has been forced to shutter. This is the latest in a string of Trump-branded businesses to fold. It follows the collapse of his namesake steak company, university, vodka brand, clothing and fragrance lines, and magazine publication over the course of the past decade.
Whispers of misconduct around Trump’s model business started some months ago. Last Fall, it was reported that the agency was scamming foreign models by bringing them into the United States without visas. Allegedly, Trump Model Management would then charge these models astronomical agency fees, putting them deep in debt to the business.
Trump founded the agency in 1999, but since last November, many of its biggest agents have quit working there. Big name models signed to its books—like Katie Moore, Mia Kang, Shirley Mallmann, and Maggie Rizzer—have also left. Former agent, Gabriel Rocha told Refinery29 that he and his fellow agents couldn’t get bookings for their clients because there was an unofficial boycott of the agency within the fashion industry. Photographers, hair stylists, makeup artists, and brands would not work with models represented by Trump.
In a leaked email, Trump Model Management president Corrine Nichols wrote: “The Trump Organization is choosing to exit the modeling industry.” She continued that “on the heels of the recent sale of the Miss Universe Organization, the company is choosing to focus on their core businesses in the real estate, golf and hospitality space.”
The closure marks a significant financial blow to Trump, who owned a 85% stake in the model agency. According to a 2016 financial disclosure, the U.S. President raked in million annually from its operation.
