A First Look at Missoni’s Unexpected Collab with Pigalle

When the news officially broke of Louis Vuitton’s collaboration with Supreme back in January, no one was surprised. Whispers about the much-hyped partnership had been circulating on the Internet for weeks, partially thanks to LV creative director Kim Jones himself, who posted and then quickly deleted a photograph of a Supreme sticker on Instagram. This same scenario did not play out when Missoni quietly announced plans to launch a menswear capsule with cult Parisian streetwear brand Pigalle last week. Of all the fashion collabs, we really didn’t see this one coming.

Now that Missoni’s released the first images of the capsule though, it all makes sense. The Italian house opened its fabric archives to Pigalle designer Stephane Ashpool, who then made-over some of his brand’s most popular pieces using a number of Missoni’s most unusual knits. Sticking to a two-color variant, Ashpool revisited fabrics from between the years of 1985 and 2010, reworking a selection of his favorite ones into patches on a range of varsity bomber jackets, cotton robes, fleece track pants, jersey sweatshirts, deerstalker hats, and even a basketball. The end result is charming in its ability to authentically recall chic heritage sportswear from eras past while still fulfilling the requirements of a cool, modern fit.

In a wider context, the collab is another sign that luxury fashion’s obsession with streetwear is no short-term thing. While we’re used to seeing houses pair up with artists or celebrities for limited edition collections, more and more brands are tapping into what’s happening on the street in real time to find special collaborators with cult followings. Fans of brands like Supreme and Pigalle are known to be particularly dedicated, with some even willing to camp out overnight to score a special item if need be.

Missoni hasn’t specified an exact date for the capsule launch, but it has confirmed that it will be available to shop exclusively at Colette in Paris, Dover Street Market in Ginza, and Pigalle stores in Paris and Tokyo at some point in April.
