Beyond the Trend: Chain Belts

START
Among the ’90s and early 2000s styles that have made a comeback, the resurgence of chain belts has especially taken hold in new and traditional ways. The accessory was a staple on vintage Chanel and Versace runways, but the look did not originate in high fashion. It has roots in multiple aesthetic traditions, including the ’70s and ’80s punk and ’80s and ’90s streetwear. Metallic detailing–specifically silver tones–was often incorporated into punk style through rivets, safety pins, excessive zippers, and chunky chains. The chain belt trend also evolved throughout hip-hop’s fashion scene, as figures like Run D.M.C., Biggie Smalls, and LL Cool J rejected the glam rock aesthetic for a sportswear-inspired look. Tracksuits and gold chains mixed high and low: casual athleisure (before it was called that) and substantial jewelry. Accessorizing with chains migrated to other parts of the body as female artists adopted the trend and transformed it into figure-accentuating body jewelry. It was amidst this surge in popularity that the high fashion designers put their spin on the look. Today, as nostalgia dominates fashion, CR takes a look back at the chain belt’s varied fashion influence.
