Ah, tinted sunglasses—the world of accessories’ most trusted friend in keeping our retinas safe. Sunglasses were first mass-introduced to the public in the summer of 1929, when a man by the name of Sam Foster began selling them along the Jersey Shore. They quickly became a key accessory, with tens of millions of pairs sold annually by the 1940s. Flash forward 60 years, and as the 2000s progressed, fashion fanatics watched lens sizes shift from very thin and Matrix-esque to something that resembled a distant relative of a housefly (not to mention, the more embellishments, the better). In honor of National Sunglasses Day, CR delves into archival sunglasses ads from the turn of the 21st century.
