Celine Muses Throughout History

The un-done elegance of the house of Celine originally began on 52 rue Malte in Paris, a husband-and-wife run boutique selling children’s made-to-order shoes. Céline Vipiana and her husband Richard co-operated the boutique, eventually venturing into women’s luxury shoes. Realizing her talent, Vipiana expanded into a ready-to-wear line with a sportswear approach. The ethos of Vipiana’s designs was to create things that women could understand and that were functional for everyday lives. The house was eventually sold to LVMH in 1996, only a year before Vipiana’s death in 1997. It was then passed through various creative directors before falling into the hands of Phoebe Philo in 2008, who changed the house, and fashion, forever. Philo’s tenure reinstated a style that aligned closely with the original vision. Her designs even garnered a fanbase nicknamed “Philophiles.” Her departure from the house in 2018 led to the appointment of Saint Laurent’s Hedi Slimane, who currently holds the role of creative director. As the result of the house being passed through various legends in the fashion world, it’s gathered much inspiration from people and places along the way.
