Calvin Klein’s Fall 2017 Campaign Features an Unusual Twist

START

Raf Simons’ Fall 2017 campaign for Calvin Klein features something unexpected—the reappearance of his first-ever ads for the house. Back in February, Raf unveiled a underwear and denim campaign called American Classics, which was photographed at various museums around the United States. Lensman Willy Vanderperre posed models in front of iconic works of American art by the likes of Andy Warhol, Dan Flavin, Sterling Ruby, and Richard Prince.

For the new Fall ads, Vanderperre and Simons erected massive billboards of American Classics in the Californian desert. The creative duo then shot the Fall 2017 collection, titled 205W39NYC, in front of them. According to a statement released by Calvin Klein this morning, Simons wanted to re-appropriate the previous season’s imagery to explore “the mannered world of high fashion combined with a sense of the everyday” as “a study in art and artifice.”

Also making a noteworthy appearance in the ads is Simons’ new denim line called Calvin Klein Jeans 1978. Building on the house’s already iconic history as an American denim heritage brand, the easy-to-wear range was heavily inspired by Brooke Sheilds’ iconic CK shoot with Richard Avedon in 1981.

Overall, the new ads are part of a major media push by Calvin Klein to promote Simons’ appointment as chief creative officer. The house projects that the images will have 850 million online impressions across 22 markets around the world. Click through to see the full campaign here.
