Karl Lagerfeld’s Cat is Expanding Her Empire

Not many cats get compared to diva Greta Garbo, are cared for by two full-time nurses, land ads that pull in million in a single year, or boast nearly 100,000 Instagram followers. But then, few felines are Karl Lagerfeld’s treasured cat, Choupette. Since she was given to the Chanel front man in 2011, the snow-white cat and her piercing blue eyes have served as an unofficial house muse. Karl has named bags and collections in tribute to the feline legend. She’s also starred in a number of fashion editorials over the course of her short, but very sweet life.

At only five-years-old she’s already quite accomplished, but as every highly driven businesscat knows, any empire has room for growth. Choupette’s next venture will be a plush toy in her likeness—faux claws and all. Discerning in her taste as she is, you won’t find the replica toy perched on the shelves of your local Toys R’Us. Choupette’s mini-me is far more lofty than your average stuffed animal and is being released in a limited run by storied German toymaker Steiff and has been handcrafted to look as realistic as possible.

In a statement, Karl explained why he chose Steiff for this highly sensitive and personal project: “Steiff is the perfect choice for this kind of collaboration. It’s the only company that has the required expertise to highlight the extreme and absolute refinement of this young Princess.”

Steiff will only make 2,000 petit Choupettes, individually priced at 500 euros. The toys will be sold at Karl Lagerfeld stores later this month and each come with an adorable leather mouse for extra amusement.
