NYFW Gets Shortened by One Day

A few months ago we asked if New York Fashion Week was “over.” Today it feels like it’s starting to slip for real. In recognition of the recent exodus of brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Rodarte, and Proenza Schouler to the West Coast or Europe, the Council of Fashion Designers of America has announced plans to shorten the official NYFW show schedule by one full day. Starting this September, NYFW will officially start when Calvin Klein kicks off proceedings at 10 a.m on Wednesday 7th. In keeping with previous years, Marc Jacobs will remain the closing show of the week, which has been moved up to Wednesday 13th.

Since chatter about New York’s decline as a fashion capital began earlier this year, Tom Ford has announced his move back to America. Effective immediately, he will produce his collections in Hedi Slimane’s old studio in Los Angeles and show his Spring 2018 collection at NYFW in September. Unfortunately it seems Ford’s one of the few American designers going against the grain.

On the bright side, a shortened schedule will be easier on show-goers, who previously faced a grueling nine days of shows. In general though, it’s hard to tell what exactly the reductive move means for the American fashion industry’s future.
