Louis Vuitton has officially announced the location for its next Resort show. In an Instagram post, creative director Nicolas Ghesquière confirmed rumors that he’ll be taking guests on an exotic journey into the lush mountainous greens of Japan for the 2018 runway show, which will be staged on May 14th at the Miho Museum in Kyoto. Designed by I.M. Pei (an infamous Chinese-American architect who turns 100-years old next week), the Asian locale is the next logical step for Ghesquière, who already tapped Pei’s gargantuan steel and glass structured triangle at the Louvre Museum in Paris for Fall 2017.
In an interview with WWD, Louis Vuitton’s chairman and chief executive officer, Michael Burker explained the decision: “We’ve always made architecture a very integral part of our story. When I launched cruise when I came here, it had to be exotic, it had to be places that you knew of but that you never went to. Japan is a destination that everybody thinks they know, but they all know Tokyo. It’s modern but exotic and everybody that goes is going to discover something that they really had no idea existed. That’s what the promise of cruise is, and then of course it has to have a design aspect. Nicolas loves Japan, he’s very inspired by Japanese fabrics, by Japanese video games, by how they dress in Harajuku and Shibuya, the audacity of the fashion there and the architecture.”
This isn’t the first time Ghesquière has taken inspiration from Japanese culture. Some of the designer’s most successful collaborations at LV have been with artists Rei Kawakubo and Yayoi Kusama. His Spring 2016 collection cited famous Japanese anime characters as a central reference.
