Since Hedi Slimane’s departure from Saint Laurent in April 2016, rumors have swirled about his possible next move. The reclusive designer has been noticeably absent from the fashion scene for the past year, choosing instead to focus on photographing new models and musicians in Los Angeles for his on-going online diary. Somewhere along the way, whispers began that he was in talks with Chanel to head up a new menswear category—a rumor which has now been squashed by the house in an official statement to WWD.

Speaking exclusively to the media outlet, a Chanel representative said the following: “The house of Chanel has no projects with Hedi Slimane. Chanel doesn’t work on the launch of a Chanel men’s wear collection.”

Those hoping that the rumors were true will likely be disappointed, particularly as the notion of Slimane and Karl Lagerfeld working alongside one another isn’t entirely far-fetched. The duo have maintained a close friendship over the years, and Karl has long been a fan of his work; In the early 2000s, Karl was known for shedding close to 90 pounds to fit into Slimane’s famously skinny Dior Homme suits.
