Chanel has presented shows all over the world, but this season’s Cruise 21/22 collection took center stage in Dubai, only the second time ever for the French fashion house to hold a show in the city. This collection was first showcased at the Carrières de Lumières in the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, in the south of France in May.
The quarry where the show was held inspired much of the collection for Creative Director, Virginie Viard, who filled big shoes stepping into her role at the helm of Chanel’s identity. The collection channeled a simplicity from the 1959 film Testament of Orpheus made in the vast chambers by the artist of many mediums and friend of Gabrielle Chanel, Jean Cocteau. Now, reimagined in a new location, the setting in Dubai threaded the atmosphere of the original show throughout with projections of olive branches across beige draped fabric.
The collection, inspired by the film, focused on a two-tone color palette that played on the contrasts of rock and punk from the 60’s. Silhouettes pulled from the era with mini-skirts paired with coats and leather harnesses, intertwining Chanel’s famous tweed suiting over rock influenced T-shirts.
The Dubai show brought stars like Penélope Cruz, Caroline de Maigret, and Soo Joo Park with actors Sofia Boutella, Tara Emad, Ruba Zarour, and Keean Johnson, and musicians Faouzia, Kungs, and John Legend. Following the show, guests attended an afterparty where Legend made a surprise performance with Faouzia.
The Chanel Cruise 2021/22 collection will be available in boutiques from November 3, 2021 in the Middle East and from November 9 in the rest of the world.
