Every Look from Maisie Wilen Resort 2022

Remember when Virginie Viard dared to bring back leggings under dresses for Chanel’s 2021 Métiers D’art collection and everyone had lots to say about that?

Well, Maisie Schloss of Maisie Wilen raises opaque and lace renditions that are less last decade and more last century (or three), layered under hyper-mini slips and knee-breeches à la Mozart. Schloss has declared that the trend is here to stay, drawing irreverent inspiration from modern lingerie (think sheer bandeaus and lace-topped stockings you might find in a bridal suite) for a collection that is surprisingly and decidedly un-precious.

White lace isn’t just for weddings and Sundays anymore — it’s for full-body getups that are entirely sheer, it’s for flaunting under zip-up hoodies, it’s for delicacy that doesn’t feel contrived. Schloss has also decided that both panties layered over intricate lace tights and skin-tight leggings under skin-tight are considered pants, which we don’t particularly mind (although it does beg the question of whether we will ever reach a consensus on what the term “pants” actually encompasses).

Maisie Schloss launched Maisie Wilen with the support of Kanye West’s creative incubator program after her time as a Yeezy designer. Schloss has since gone on to sell her collections at dozens of retailers and dress most of the Kardashian-Jenner clan along with amassing a huge amount of brand hype that is barely represented by her social media following of 50.8k.

Most models in the Resort 2022 collection wore white elbow- or wrist-length gloves. Schloss may have offered white-glove service (ie. meticulous care, attention, or service, according to the Oxford Dictionary) to this particular collection but the intended final aesthetic is far from meticulous or precise. Little Bo Peep hats sit atop mussed hair that’s purposefully undone and the ribbons that drip off of each pair of strappy heels might be a tripping hazard. Not to say that this level of roughness isn’t on purpose, though, as the integration of the feminine and the unpolished makes sense. Schloss leans more towards cheeky rather than demure, with ribbons that dance all the way up the lace-covered legs of each model and cutouts galore. Her signature prints were present but less of the focus for Resort 2022, although the trippy pink and green psychedelic mini dress was a standout look.

Other notable moments in Maisie Wilen’s Resort 2022 collection include a 70’s suit set made of what appears to be suede, bringing to mind the revolutionary UltraSuede fabric popularized by Halston in the early 1970s. There was also an abundance of Y2K mini skirts that were more rectangular and low-slung than most skirt silhouettes from the past decade, a stylish gloved getup that utilizes some pretty realistic looking pajama shorts, and plenty of three-dimensional ribboned footwear. As we wait for Schloss’ next round of creations to come to life, you can be sure that you’ll find us pouring over her past five collections.
