“I always liked the word ‘SEX’ – the good and the bad – it puts people on edge,” said Creative Director of Chrome Hearts and Sex Records creator Matt DiGiacomo. Founders Laurie and Richard Stark met DiGiacomo at a young age on the path to becoming an artist. Having a kindred spirit with the iconic American luxury house, he soon moved throughout the company working primarily in painting and illustration to ultimately creating limited edition capsule collections for the house like Sex Records.
The hypothetical record label-meets-capsule brand is DiGiacomo’s 90s-fueled brainchild that first released in 2018 at Maxfield in Los Angeles. The first collection managed to sell out in one night, and now, the Chrome Hearts family is ready for round two.
Offering up a three-day experience inspired by the big box toy stores we know and love from the 90s and early 2000s, the space conjures the twisted Toys-R-Us experience you’d expect from Chrome Hearts. Complete with Chrome Hearts-branded toilet paper, a conveyor belt checkout counter, and limited edition 99 Eyes sunglasses encased in a box with a toy car, the space mimics those nostalgic little details with a modern flair.
In terms of the capsule, DiGiacomo’s background in illustration shines through in the form of whimsical childlike illustrations that decorate the collection as well as the space. Fan favorites make a return, like “Sex”-patched vintage Carhartt worker trousers, leather racing jackets with leather patchwork Chrome Hearts emblems, a variety of limited edition Nike sneakers featuring 24-karat gold and sterling silver hardware, and a limited edition “Chicken Nugget” bag featuring a leather “Sex” patch across the side.
Since the Starks first founded Chrome Hearts, they’ve put a focus on nurturing emerging talent; whether it be outsourcing up-and-coming industry stars or harnessing the effortlessly cool styles of their three children Jesse Jo, Frankie Belle, and Kristian – all of whom help design for the house and have their signature pieces. Jesse Jo, who primarily writes and records music (her latest EP “A Pretty Place to Fall Apart” released last week), also leads her own merch brand Deadly Doll while her younger sister Frankie Belle runs Dipped in Blue Swimwear. The never-before-seen space located adjacent from the brand’s New York Flagship will now work as a creative experimental space for Chrome Hearts in furthering their cultivation of talent and creation.
While the Sex Records exhibition is open to the public, appointments for the space’s three-day event are entirely booked up. Though don’t worry, you can still snag a pair of 99 Eyes sunglasses in a limited edition colorway online. Until the next drop, we’ll be waiting for Chrome Hearts’ next experiential exhibition in their new New York studio.
The Sex Records Experience is now open to the public by-appointment only with select pieces now available online at chromehearts.com.
