Karl Lagerfeld and Kenneth Ize have collaborated in an exclusive ready-to-wear capsule with Farfetch for Spring/Summer 2021, curated by Style Advisor Carine. Hun Kim, design director of the late legend’s label, co-created the collection with Ize to reflect an intersection of Nigerian and European styles, in a gender-neutral line of clothing and accessories that celebrates evolving culture.
Karl Lagerfeld X Kenneth Ize features bold colors and prints in crisp silhouttes, including Lagerfeld’s signature palette of black and white, and pops of color are directly inspired by the traditional handwoven aso oke cloth of the Yoruba people of western Africa.
The capsule is defined by tailored separates, such as knitted tops and pants, diamond-print skirts with matching button-downs, silk swirl-printed shirts and matching pants made from Italian hemp material, vertical striped sweaters in a soft wool-cotton blend, and sharp tailored blazers. It’s a versatile range of garments that may suit any gender expression; a sentiment which alines with the designers’ shared mission towards innovation, authenticity, and heritage.
“Gender is a construct and there really is no reason why more collections can’t encompass this all-inclusive approach,” noted Ize. “It doesn’t matter what gender you identify with – it’s how you express yourself that’s important, and I think this collection allows for endless possibilities in that respect.”
The phone bag and other available accessories utilize fabrics sourced from Nigeria as well as sustainably sourced leather, which adhered to standards set by the Leather Working Group (LWG), in intricate weaving and leather detailing. Lagos-born designer and 2019 LVMH Prize finalist Ize is devoted to preserving traditional Nigerian artisanship, as the brand sources from a small community of weavers, where he merges handcraft into a new, original luxury perspective. Combined with Lagerfeld’s rocker-chic aesthetic and classic Parisian tailoring, the two create a distinctive point of view that is equally forward-facing and wearable.
“When seeing Kenneth’s runway, it’s something that struck me. Everything feels interchangeable. I liked the idea of a shared wardrobe and we all thought it would make complete sense to build this capsule as a unisex collection,” said Carine. “I’m sure Karl would have loved Kenneth’s work. Karl always gave such a powerful energy and great freedom; he always wanted to be surprised and expected people to go beyond their own boundaries.”
“It’s a collection made for both men and women,” said Ize, “so the attitude is cool, strong, and confident.”
The KARL LAGERFELD X KENNETH IZE collection is available now KARL.com, FARFETCH.com, Brownsfashion.com, and in the Paris Saint Germain & London Regent Street Karl Lagerfeld stores starting July 7, 2021.
