Enter the fantastical dream of Thom Browne’s vision of the Wizard of Oz in the Alpine alps with gold medal Olympian Lindsay Vonn, clicking her golden heeled boots with her little stick figure friends. In 2010, the former Olympian became the first American woman to win the gold in skiing. In a dreamy snow-coated runway presentation, Vonn takes her favorite sport to the runway in Thom Brown’s black and white fashion film directed by Carissa Gallo.

The L.A’s Memorial Sports Coliseum was Browne’s first inspiration of the collection based on his L.A trip in September. The designer envisioned a combination of extreme sports and tuxedos with Lindsey Vonn sporting the looks. Shot at Solitude Mountain, Park City, Utah Vonn the golden queen of the show is in a sportswear couture off-the-shoulder puffer gown fusing a half tuxedo top.

The exceptional sculptural construction of Browne’s androgynous collection shows the appreciation of the highest forms of dressmaking for all. In terms of the looks, the house mixed and matched classic tailoring pieces: bustier-meets-tuxedos, topcoats paired with skirts, and elements of corsetry throughout. The pieces experiment with voluminous shape and detail in a series of knits, wovens, nylon, tweed, and delicate embroidery of snowflakes, mittens, and stick figures. Vonn skis down the alps to meet a series of models in gender-bending outfits standing straight as if they were store mannequins or apart of a fashion exhibition at a museum under grey skies.

The approach in showing men’s and women’s as one outfit is a combination in hommage to the possibilities both the sexes can achieve. It’s current to the conversation of non-conforming gender roles, where women like men can win the Olympics and men can wear a sculptural tuxedo with delicate glimmering bead details. It’s the self-expression of every personality to feel comfortable, confident, and stylish in the freedom of expression including dress. Clothing is genderless, non-conforming to barriers like the greatness of the human spirit bare to the bone in Browne’s black and white winter fantasy. There are no limits to the possibilities one can achieve or dress according to Thom Browne.
