Late acclaimed designer Oscar de la Renta had a massive green thumb.

The Dominican couturier spent much of his life outside of his New York atelier tending to his gardens both in the United States and in the Dominican Republic. Fields of green hedges and perfectly-manicured rows of flowers inspired much of the late-designer’s creative process.

Both in an ode to the hazy nature of carefree, late summers and to de la Renta himself, co-Creative Directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim present a floral-filled Fall/Winter 2021 collection. The 34-piece look book, featuring show regular Candice Swanepoel, is a fitting ode to the summers gone and passed in the pandemic. In collaboration with artist Tricia Paoluccio, pressed flowers and vine elements weave their way throughout the collection.

While Garcia and Kim looked towards the tropics for their last collection, this Fall/Winter 2021 feels more delicate in nature. An embellished sunflower adorns a baby blue tulle bodice dress while ruffles and tiered skirts highlight the feminine form. Crisply-tailored suits with sculpted golden bows retain an air of womanhood while emphasizing masculine silhouettes– a classic element of de la Renta’s work.

For the collection’s finale, Swanepoel wears a sweeping ballgown embellished with crystals, packing one final punch. When the lockdown is over, we know what we’ll be wearing to our neighborhood bodega.
